Takayama Jinya
jinya
Because of its valuable timber resources, the Hida Region around Takayama was put under direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1692. The Takayama Jinya (高山陣屋) served as the local government office headed by the officials dispatched from Edo (present day Tokyo). The building complex was in official use until 1969, and is now open to the public as a museum. It includes various nicely maintained tatami mat rooms that once served as offices, conference rooms, guest rooms and residential space. There is also an interesting interrogation room. Beside the main building stands a large storehouse built in the 1600s. Known as the biggest traditional rice storehouse in Japan, it now functions as a museum, showcasing belongings and official documents of past feudal lords, old maps of the Hida Region and historic town plans.

Sanmachi Suji
img136_file
Takayama's old town has been beautifully preserved with many buildings and whole streets of houses dating from the Edo Period (1600-1868), when the city thrived as a wealthy town of merchants. The southern half of the old town, especially the Sannomachi Street, survives in a particularly pretty state with many old homes, shops, coffee houses and sake breweries, some of which have been in business for centuries. The shops in the area are typically open daily from 9:00 to 17:00. Several homes in the old town open their doors to the public. They provide a glimpse behind the facade into the former living quarters of the local merchants and exhibit traditional household goods and local arts and crafts. A pleasant alternative to exploring Takayama's old town on foot is getting pulled through the streets on a rickshaw. A 30 minute tour for two costs around 5000 yen. Shorter and longer courses are also available.

Yatai Kaikan
yataikaikan
The Floats are normally stored in "Yatai gura", special thick walled storehouses with very tall doors, which can be seen in various districts of the town. However, the Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine has received special permission to display four of the eleven Autumn festival in the exhibition hall so that visitors can see them as they appear on the day of the festival. The floats on display are changed three times a year. Try to imagine the festival procession at twilight. Glowing lanterns highlight the gold and lacquer of the Floats as they are pulled across one of the bright red bridges that cross Takayama’s many small rivers, the colors reflecting on the water. As the procession moves along to the sounds of the festival music, it still remains a spectacle of the festival in Edo period. We hope you will enjoy your visit to Takayama and extends a special invitation to return to our city to see the Festival !

The restaurant is very spacious and relaxing and can seat 108 people in comfort. The seating is Japanese-style featuring horigotatsu seats which means you sit around a low table on tatami mat floor, but the floor under the table is dug out so you have plenty of comfortable leg space just like at a Western-style table.

Senkō-ji Temple
senkoji
This senkoji mountain is said to have been settled 1600 years ago by Ryomen Sukuna, whose family possessed great military power and wealth. The temple was built as a Buddhist Temple by one of the ten disciples of Kobo-daishi, Shinnyo Shinno (the Emperor’s son) about 1200 years ago. During the most prosperous period, there were 19 Buddhist buildings on the mountain. But they were burnt down when the army of the Takeda attacked them in the 7th year of the Eiroku period (1564). The lord of Takayama castle, Kanamori who later became the king of Hida area, built a new castle in remembrance of the old one. This new castle has remained until the present day. It is now a temple of the Shingon Denomination.

Sakurayama Hachiman-gū Shrine
hachiman-gu
The origins of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine date from the time of the Emperor Nintoku (413 - 439), when he requested Prince Takefurukuma-no-mikoto to subjugate the monster Ryoumen Sukuna, an incredible beast with 2 heads, 4 arms and 4 legs. Before undertaking his task, the warrior enshrined his father, the Emperor Ojin as the deity of this sanctuary, and prayed for the success of his mission. In 1683, through the benefaction of Lord Kanamori, the shirine was enlarged and officially established for the protection of the town. More than 1,500,000 people visit the shirine annually.
